The burning of fossil fuels is killing the world as we know it. In the lifetimes of our children, the following is expected:
- due to carbon build-up in our atmosphere (mostly a result of the extraction and burning of fossil fuels) average global temperatures will rise 3 degrees or more;
- extreme weather events will worsen;
- climate changes will occur and will wreak havoc with farming in many regions across the world - to the point where many people will face starvation;
- large areas of arctic and antarctic ice will melt;
- ocean levels will rise by over a foot;
- many animal species will be threatened with extinction;
- many people will be displaced from their homes and homelands;
- out of desperation many of the displaced will seek refuge in other lands and this could trigger wars and loss of life
The situation is bad. And our governments' efforts to change the course of global warming and climate change are seriously inadequate. If we are to prevent the above, we need to be doing more. The most effective action would be to greatly reduce the extraction and burning of fossil fuels - and do this very soon.
How might this be done? I would suggest one good approach (good from the perspective of likely being effective) would be to raise the cost of extracting, processing, delivering and burning fossil fuels.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course fossil fuel price increases would be a negative to current fossil fuel consumers - which is to say, to almost all of us.
So it is to be expected that the price increases would likely be politically and otherwise opposed by many. And it is to be expected that there would be a lot of political chaos around the issue.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
It is clear that our governments are unable or unwilling to make the price increases. So that leaves it to us, the public.
What actions can we take that will raise the prices of fossil fuels so that we consume a lot less of them? Some thoughts:
- active protests to block/impede fossil fuel exploration and drilling operations
- active protests to block/impede fossil fuel refining operations
- active protests to block/impede transportation of fossil fuels
- active protests to block/impede purchase of fossil fuels
