In Figure 2 the trend data are replotted following removal of the exponential component. And, I have added to the figure my guesses as to the causes of the peaks and valleys that remain.

Guess at NASDAQ drivers
40 years of NASDAQ index values are plotted in Figure 1 below. An exponential line statistically fitted to the data is also shown in the figure. In my opinion the quality of the fit to actual indicates exponential growth to be the biggest driver of the NASDAQ index trending.
In Figure 2 the trend data are replotted following removal of the exponential component. And, I have added to the figure my guesses as to the causes of the peaks and valleys that remain.
