Over just the past week, 10,500 Americans died from COVID. Greater than 80% of these deaths would not have happened if only everyone were vaccinated. The vaccines are available, and are free. Some just refuse to get them.
The US executive branch announced last week that all companies of more than 100 employees must see that their unvaccinated workers are tested weekly. This makes a lot of sense.
Sure the courts may decide the government is overstepping their authority (and maybe they are) and, sure, a lot of employers may decide to not comply.
Regardless, there are two things this action will do:
- To the extent that this does result in more people getting vaccinated, it will reduce COVID deaths.
- It will make clear who is responsible for the COVID deaths due to infection picked up from the workplace: the political and other 'leaders' who encourage non-compliance; the companies who do not comply; and the employees who go to work without vaccinations
I strongly feel the testing of unvaccinated employees is the right thing to do. The unvaccinated have no right to put COVID risk to the people they interact with in the workplace.
If the unvaccinated refuse to comply with the testing then the employer has to decide how to deal with them.
If it was up to me, I'd put them on unpaid leave, or I would fire them.
