While out walking this evening Jetta and I scared up a black bear. Less than a quarter mile from our house and just about 100 yards into the woods, we heard a deep grunting " uuh, uuh, uh" from just ahead in the brush. Jetta's hackles rose. She stopped and pointed. A few seconds later the sounds of something big moving in the brush triggered Jetta to run off to the side and begin barking. With loud thrashing and scraping sounds now coming from further off in the distance Jetta charged off toward the source. As I called her back I slowly and cautiously moved in the same direction. I worked my way through the brush and around the small trees. I patted Jetta and told her to sit. As she calmed I told her "good dog".
After we slowly moved ahead another 30 ft I spotted him - a black bear 20 ft up a thick white pine, just another 70 ft ahead. He rested belly down on the first branch of the tree. Not huge, but not a cub either, maybe my size. From his face I would say he was maybe several years old or older.
We watched him for about 10 minutes then left to give him some peace.
