The 2013 Crisis

Remember peak oil in 2005?   And peak PC in 2012?

In 2013 get ready for a new crisis - peak cell phone.   As of the end of 2012 almost everyone who could afford one had one, and so did millions who couldn't afford them.  That reality, plus the reality that cell phone service plans are not at all worth the $50 to 100 monthly fees ($600 to $1200 per year!) we're paying, will very soon lead to millions dropping their plans and flushing their cells. (Actually millions have already dropped their cells into the loo - it's one of the most common reasons for needing a replacement.)

But the main driver of the crisis is not just the cost.  Rather, it's that people are just now learning that there is an alternative (which by the way does cost a whole lot less) - the WiFi phone.

Here's one that costs $199, plus $0 monthly fees - that is, as long as you've got access to free WiFi, which you can pick up most anywhere anymore:
