Chamonix, France

Today Frank and I got a bit of a late start after some early morning shopping.   At about noon we took a gondola up out of town to the mountains just on the north side of the valley.   We hiked trails for 3 to 4 hours  and then took a cable car down.   Very scenic, most of the trails in very good condition.   Rain started at about 3pm and we put our rain jackets on but got pretty wet anyway.   We met and talked briefly with a college student from Kansas who was hiking the other direction.  At the end of the hike, the top point of another cable car,  we stopped in a restaurant for tea and dried off some.   The hot tea hit the spot!

We struck up a conversation with two Brits on the ride down.   The guy, Neil, about 30 yrs old, was a freelance climbing guide, the gal, Tasha, also about 30, said she was just vacationing the area for the summer.   Nice people.  The gave us a lift from the base of the cable car back to Chamonix and saved us 4 miles of walking along the roadways.

We're hoping for a good day tomorrow so that the three of us (Dave is scheduled to arrive this evening) can take a cable car up to the Midi peak (12,600 ft) where we'd like to do some hiking on a glacier.

8:30pm update - Dave just arrived!   0% chance of rain forcast for tomorrow - so going up the cable car to Aiguille du Midi looks likely,
